North Brother Island is among the most unexpected of places: an uninhabited island of ruins in New York City that hardly anyone knows; a secret existing in plain sight. Christopher Paynewas allowed in the island to record the buildings and evolving landscape.
From the artist:
North Brother Island came into prominence in the late 19th century, when public health issues of an exploding population regularly made headlines. Like other islands in the harbor, it was perfectly suited as a buffer against contagions, and from the 1870s through the 1930s it was used primarily as a quarantine hospital (the infamous Typhoid Mary was confined there). After WWII it provided a temporary home for veterans, and from the 1950s it was used as a juvenile drug treatment center until its closure in 1963. Over the years, new uses have been proposed for the island, but by and large it has been forgotten.
North Brother Island: The Last Unknown Place In New York City was published by Empire Editions/Fordham University Press in 2014, with an introduction by author Robert Sullivan and history by Randall Mason.
today i finally put together a “book” that one of my classes wrote together last year and felt it was necessary to bring back this classic not-at-all-prompted contribution from a then 7 year old: “I got stuck in a castle. I was in its jail. They did not feeded me all I had was a porta potty. I was in jail because I didn’t even know there were taxes there. Except I lied. I read a lot about England and I decided I did not want to pay taxes.”
please appreciate that this child was free to write about literally whatever she could imagine about herself time traveling and she wrote about being jailed for tax evasion in the middle ages
In 2005, a group of artists in Italy built a giant 200-foot-long plushie rabbit in the countryside, and just left it there. It’s been there ever since.
PLANT. A short story that I have been working on for some time. I’m happy to finally finish it! It’s a wordless comic about a boy who rescues a baby plant whale from a tangled vine and finds a lost baby elephant. They go on a little exploration to eventually find their families! I kept the story super simple. :) Enjoy!
These are not in order! You can read the rest of the story on the link below:
